University of Calgary Program Listings

Calgary is a university city with the University of Calgary offering many top undergraduate and graduate programs for both Canadian and international students.

Calgary offers ESL levels one to five in 12 week semester courses. Level 6: Academic Focus is the top level of the ESL Semester Program focuses on the written and oral skills necessary for success in the English language post-secondary classroom. Students completing Level 6, with a minimum final grade of B+ in each course meet the English language proficiency requirement for: ​​Academic Communication Certificate (ACC), UCalgary Continuing Education International Professional Programs and applicable Bow Valley College certificate and diploma programs.

Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) At SAIT, English Language Arts admission requirements for the programs you apply to must demonstrate English language proficiency. English is the language of instruction for all programs at SAIT and is the most common language used in business in Alberta. Acceptable tests include: IELTS, TOEFL, CAEL, CLBA, Michigan, Oxford, Cambridge and Pearson.

The English Language Foundations (ELF) program provides English language upgrading for learners whose first language is not English. Students are placed into the program based on demonstrated proficiency in English, using the Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment (CLBA) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination. Most students use the ELF program as entry into SAIT career programs. After successfully completing the ELF program, the majority of graduates are prepared for admission into SAIT career programs as completion of ELF level 5 is accepted as equivalent to English 30 for most programs at SAIT. Students in ELF Levels 4 and 5 may combine ELF coursework with Academic Upgrading subjects in math or science.

Calgary Board of Education students have equitable access to quality, sustainable language learning programs and courses. L.E.A.D. classes are small so students get a lot of extra help. The focus in classes is English Language Development. Lead lessons include mathematics, science, computer technology and Canadian culture. Students in L.E.A.D. programs make significant gains in 20 months. They can transition to ESL or other classes in the school.

The Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) provides a Preschool program for children who have minimal or no English language skills. Children must meet the eligibility criteria for the program. Interviews will take place in the spring to determine eligibility. This is a free, publicly funded program. All families are encouraged to inquire.
