Annual Events

World famous annual events held each year in Toronto include: Carabana Toronto, International Beaches Jazz Festival, Just for Laughs Toronto, Nuit Blanche, Fringe Theatre Festival, North by Northeast Music Festival, One of a Kind Craft Show, Luminato, Santa's Parade of Lights, Scream in High Park - Literary Festival, Pride Parade of Toronto, Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, St. Patrick's Day Parade, Cavalcade of Lights, Toronto Trek Convention, The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, Summerlicious and Winterlicious Toronto.

My favorite Toronto annual event is the Canadian National Exhibition held each summer.

Art Galleries

Toronto has several art galleries that exhibit a wide variety of permanent collections and feature international traveling exhibits. Art galleries include: Art Gallery of Ontario, McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Powerplant Gallery, Ryerson Gallery, University of Toronto Gallery and Art Gallery of York University.

The Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition is underway for the summer. The event includes sculpture, painting, original prints, ceramics, glass, metal, wood, fibre, photography and mixed media. The annual Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition will take place at Nathan Phillips Square.

Libraries

Toronto Libraries are generally regarded as the best when compared to any major city library system. The Toronto reference Library offers millions of books, maps, documents, DVDs, videos, CDs, ESL and FSL learning materials and a fully equipped language listening laboratory.

Toronto Reference Library Tour. The new Toronto reference library officially opened, 2 November, 1977 at 789 Yonge Street, at the northeast corner of Asquith Avenue. This library features several collections, many services, virtual and computer learning stations including language learning labs.

Cinesphere Theatre at Ontario Place and Omnimax at the Ontario Science Centre

Canada's Walk of Fame presents the Annual Tribute Gala honoring Canada's biggest entertainment stars. Canada has a long history starting with Warner Brothers from New Brunswick and featuring teen idols from Paul Anka to Justin Bieber, singing diva's, country stars, silent movie heroines, famous sex symbols, brilliant comedy stars, even the tweeting astronaut.

Museums

The Toronto Information Guide "Museums" is the best place to start looking at the variety of Toronto Museums. Museums include: Bata Shoe Museum, Black Creek Pioneer Village, CBC Museum, Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, Casa Loma, The Hockey Hall of Fame, Museum for Textiles, MZTV Museum of Television and the World Famous Royal Ontario Museum.

Ontario Science Centre
Experience over 800 interactive exhibits, daily demonstrations and programs. Visit Ontario's only dome theatre and see a large-format film under the giant IMAX dome screen.

The Toronto Aerospace Museum's most ambitious project is the construction of a full-size replica of the magnificent Avro CF-105 Arrow supersonic interceptor that first flew at Toronto's Malton Airport in 1958.

Black Creek Pioneer Village a restored 19th-century rural Victorian community, is located in northwest Toronto. The Village re-creates the past with over 35 carefully restored 1860s shops and homes, interpreters in period dress who help guide you through Canadian history.

Fort York reconstructed after the battle, today's Fort York is Canada's largest collection of original War of 1812 buildings and a designated National Historic Site.

Nature Trails and Parks

Metro Toronto Parks Facilities include hiking trails, nature trails, playing fields, community centers, recreation facilities events and camps. The Toronto Island Park and Waterfront Trail are excellent locations for leisure time relaxation.

Allen Gardens Conservatory
Features six greenhouses comprising over 16,000 square feet of colourful seasonal plants which supplement the permanent plant collection. Of botanical importance since 1858 the conservatory boasts the "Palm House" (1910) modeled after similar structures in the United States and England.

Centreville Amusement Park is nestled on over 600 acres of parkland with over 30 rides and attractions. The Toronto islands offer a panoramic view of the city skyline and miles of parkland with beaches, barbecues and picnic tables, boat rentals, bicycle paths and a children's farm.

Paramount Canada's Wonderland is Canada's premier theme park and features over 200 attractions, more than 60 thrilling rides, North America's greatest variety of roller coasters, and Splash Works, a 20-acre water park.

Outdoor Activities and Exhibitions

The Toronto waterfront has excellent walking trails which connect "The Beaches", Harbourfront Centre and Ontario Place. Other Toronto outdoor activities and exhibitions include: Canada's Wonderland, the CN Tower, Metro Toronto Zoo and Skydome.

The SkyDome
The tour begins with a visit to the renovated museum area and a short film about the construction of the SkyDome. It continues with a 45 minute guided walking tour of areas not usually accessible to the general public.

Riverdale Farm
Located within the historic Cabbagetown area, Riverdale Farm replicates a small, turn of the century Ontario farm. Cows, pigs, horses, goats and chicken provide lots of fun and learning opportunities for informal demonstrations including milking, cream separating, egg collecting, sheep shearing and wool spinning.

Ontario Place is a 96-acre modernistic park with a culture, leisure and entertainment complex built on three human-made islands over the lake. Ontario Place features restaurants, a children's village, an outdoor amphitheatre, a water play area, mini-golf, the Rush River Raft Ride and many other attractions. The highlight of Ontario Place is the Cinesphere - a six-story curved screen capable of showing not only regular 35 and 70 millimetre films, but IMAX films as well.

Performance Arts Dance Opera Theatre Stages

Toronto is home to the third largest Live Entertainment Center in North America. The excellent Performance Arts Dance Opera Theatre Stages include: Harbourfront Centre, Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts, National Ballet of Canada, New Opera Centre, Royal Alexandra Theatre, Princess of Wales Theatre, Roy Thomson Hall, Ryerson Dance, Second City Theatre Company, St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, York U. Dance Events and Yuk Yuk's.

Professional Sports

Visitors to Toronto can attend many different professional sports. Toronto teams include: Toronto Argonauts Football, Toronto Blue Jays Baseball, Toronto Indy Car Racing, Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey, Toronto Raptors Basketball, Toronto Rock Lacrosse and the "TFC" Toronto Football Club for soccer.

Toronto Argonauts Football Club
Formed as part of the Argonaut Rowing Club using the double blue colours of Oxford and Cambridge for club members who were rugby football enthusiasts. The Argos celebrate 130 years of history including 14 Grey Cup championships.

Toronto Blue Jays Baseball
Special group programs include: play baseball/softball on the same field; take to the mound, throw a pitch; all summer camp groups of 20 or more are invited to watch the Blue Jays; a buffet picnic in the stands and catch all the behind-the-scenes action in the Blue Jays Bullpen

The Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Team will make you cry. The last 2 years featured high hopes and team collapses.

The University of British Columbia

The University of British Columbia boasts some of the city's best attractions and recreation facilities, including the Museum of Anthropology, the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, the UBC Botanical Garden and Centre for Plant Research, and forested trails in the adjoining Pacific Spirit Regional Park. LINC stands for Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada. The LINC program is one of the immigrant settlement services provided through the National Settlement Program. Greater Victoria School District No. 61

English Language Learner ELL is offered in all 25 schools in the Greater Victoria School District. Most schools employ a support teacher who works in collaboration with classroom teachers. Students eligible for ELL instruction are Canadian residents whose English language skills need improvement in order to be academically successful. Students may be funded to receive additional ELL instruction to a maximum of 5 years.

ELL Academic Literacy 11 is a designed ESL program for senior ELL students who wish to develop, strengthen and enhance their writing skills in order to write effectively at the level expected of them in Grades 11 and 12. The course will reinforce the aspects of good paragraph writing and introduce students to the major components of essay writing, various essay types and the writing process itself. Through the course, students will gain an awareness of their abilities and potential as writers and also an awareness of their own identity and cultural contributions to Canadian culture and society through literature. The course will also prepare students for the written components of the Literacy Assessment. It is expected that, through this course, students will gain an awareness of their abilities.

The purpose of the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA) is to support the full integration of newcomer immigrants and refugees into the social, economic and civic life of the Capital Region of British Columbia. The University Admission Preparation (UAP) is a full-time 20 class hours per week program with skills and academic integrity workshops, homestay accommodation and meals.

ESL at Royal Roads University

English is the primary language of instruction and communication at Royal Roads University. All students are required to meet our English language requirements. You need to demonstrate a minimum level of English proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing when you apply. Candidates can verify English competency by submitting an English language proficiency test score report from the following organizations: (IELTS-A 6.5 ) , (TOEFL-iBT 79 ) , (PTE-A 55 ) , Duolingo (DET 105).

If you've been conditionally admitted into a degree program at Royal Roads, but don't meet the English language requirements, you can complete an international pathway program to demonstrate proficiency in English.
