Located on the Petitcodiac River, Moncton lies at the geographic centre of the Maritime Provinces and earned the nickname "Hub City". Moncton was officially founded in 1766 and was named for Lt. Col. Robert Monckton, the British officer who had captured nearby Fort Beauséjour a century earlier. Moncton had two past industries, shipbuilding and the CNR Railway locomotive shops. Moncton is the most populous city in New Brunswick, in 2021 the city had a population of 79,470.
